Search Patterns

Search patterns are designed to efficiently cover the assigned search area. There are many factors that are considered when selecting an appropriate search pattern. For air search and rescue, search patterns may be divided into two broad categories: visual search, where spotters use their eyes to detect evidence of the crash location, or survivors; and electronic search, where radio reception equipment is used to locate the aircraft Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT).
